According to Best Orthopedic Surgeon in Karachi one of the most common physical ailments presenting in the orthopedic outpatient department is: back pain. This ailment can present in four out of every five Americans, regardless of gender. Read on to know more about back pain and the remedies for it:

In addition to medicinal treatment, natural remedies can also go a long way in soothing back pain. According to Wilson Ray, MD, at Washington University School of Medicine, home remedies tend to ‘be better when they are combined’. Such remedies can include:

  • Sleeping better: poor sleeping posture can make back pain worse. Sleeping poorly can be hard on the back and can aggravate existing pain. Back pain can be improved by keeping the spine in neutral position. To do this, it is recommended to keep a pillow between the knees, as this helps to relieve the strain on the back as well. The mattress should be comfortable yet firm for such patients.
  • Walking and exercising: many people with back pain have a common misconception that walking and exercising is bad for them. However, daily activity and movement, including a thirty-minute brisk walk at least thrice a week can help in improving back pain. Being sedentary, on the contrary, can cause the muscles around the back and spine to become weak and offer less support for the spinal column.
  • Consuming turmeric milk: a natural drink of milk and turmeric, about ½ teaspoon of turmeric in milk can work as an anti-inflammatory. Consumption of this drink, particularly before bedtime can improve back pain and mitigate the inflammatory process in the body.
  • Avoiding static pose: paying attention to position of the spine and avoiding staying in the same posture can reduce the stress on joints. For instance, sitting for long times at a desk while working causes excessive pressure on the spinal disc. To remedy this, one should aim to get up every hour or so and take a load off the discs.
  • Gentle stretches: yoga and gentle stretches are an effective way to improve the health of joints and muscles and combat back pain. In addition, flexibility of joints increases with gentle stretches. An ideal time for yoga to help loosen the spine and reducing stiffness is early morning. In addition to gentle stretching and yoga, mindful meditation can also release endorphins which improve mood and reduces anxiety and stress.
  • Alternate heating and cooling: during acute episodes of pain, alternate heating and cooling can help to improve back pain by reducing swelling and inflammation in the spinal muscles. Experts suggest limiting the time of heating and cooling up to twenty minutes at a stretch for relief. However, these heat and cold packs should not be used directly after applying medication and ointments on the skin.
  • OTC medication: drugs like NSAIDs and acetaminophen are over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs that can provide immediate relief from occasional back pain.
  • Reducing weight: overweight individuals put more stress on the back, while shedding the extra weight can help lighten the load on the lower back. With weight loss, there is reduced mechanical pressure on the spine and improvement in back pain. One can seek help of a healthcare provider for weight loss and an exercise plan that works best for spinal health.
  • Smoking cessation: research data shows that individuals who smoke and take in second hand smoke are more likely than non-smokers to suffer from degenerative disk disease and poor spine health. Spinal bones are weakened by nicotine and tobacco products. Thus, smoking cessation goes a long way in improving back pain and bone health.
  • Supplementing with vitamin D and calcium: while it is best to get minerals and vitamins from foods, supplements fortified with vitamin D and calcium are good for bone health. In addition to vitamin D deficiency, lack of magnesium can lead to muscle weakness and cramping. Thus, good for bone health supplements can help calm inflammation and improve muscle weakness and cramping. It is important to ask your healthcare provider for the right kind of supplements as suited to your health. More information about the supplements can be sought from experts at Evercare Hospital.
